Products - Information Suppliers - PXT Transponder

The PXT Transponder is a small device that’s roughly the size of a candy bar. It’s really kind of nondescript appearance-wise – no buttons, no switches, no screen. It’s just a small box with a power jack, an LED to let you know it’s on, and a mini-USB connector. That’s it.

Just plug it in and it goes to work. Doing what you may ask?

Communicating. The transponder enables information suppliers to communicate with passersby about anything. It can communicate text, graphics, and sound wirelessly to people who are equipped with PXT Probe software on their Windows Mobile smartphones and PDAs.

Text, graphics, sound? That’s fairly general. That could mean almost anything. Exactly. Content can be created to describe exhibits in the museum, historical buildings, new cars on the showroom floor, the daily special in your local restaurant, the house that’s for sale on your block --- anything really.

OK. So how is this thing programmed, given that it has no buttons, no switches, and no screen? That’s where that mini-USB connector comes into play. This is also where the PXT Transponder starts to act like a flash drive.

When you plug the PXT Transponder into your PC it appears as though you just inserted a flash drive. It appears that the PXT Transponder is nothing more than a collection of folders and files.
You create the content files on your PC and then drag them into the Content folder, and … that’s it. The content is automatically processed by the PXT Transponder and immediately made available to passersby.

You create the content using ordinary Windows tools such as Wordpad, Paint, Digital Image Pro, etc on any USB-equipped desktop or laptop computer running Windows XP or Windows Vista. (Now of course there a few rules about what you can and cannot do and all this is explained in the PXT Transponder Owners Manual.)

You use this same mechanism for everything related to configuration. When new versions of the software are available, you simply download it from this site to your PC, and from there, drag the downloaded file into the “program” folder. The software will be automatically downloaded and installed on the PXT Transponder.

To repeat the PXT Transponder is a s-i-m-p-l-e device and we intend to keep it that way. Still it does have some limited security capabilities – or access control capabilities to be more precise. You can tell the transponder which probes it is allowed to talk to, or the other way around, you can tell it which probes it cannot talk to. If you don’t care – and we expect most owners will not care – just leave things alone and the content will be available to all probes within a 30ft radius.

The PXT Transponder also maintains an activity log so that the owner can see how many PXT Probes are accessing the transponder and specifically what content is requested by each probe. To view the log – you guessed it: just attach the PXT Transponder to your PC and open the “log” folder.

When you purchase a PXT Transponder – it’s all yours and there are no other charges. There are no usage fees or monthly service fees of any kind. Communicate freely.
